Day 14 Sabie 31st December 2010

A Visit to the Elephant Sanctuary
(Written by Cheyna)

Words cannot do justice to how amazing this experience was.
Walking into the enclosure many gasped were heard and grins were captured by the ever clicking cameras.

The day started with a nice cup of coffee on a beautiful shaded verander were we signed our lives away.
After everyone was done we walked to the elephants day enclosure where we listened to our guide, Misheck and then each had a turn to brush the elephants.

Once everybody had had a chance we went to a shady lapa and listened to Mishecks educational talk about the elephants and there amazing qualities. One of the interesting facts being that elephants have 16 different communications, 5 of which us as humans can hear.

After the talk was done and we were all left stunned by these amazing creatures we made our way down into the forest where we interacted with the elephants. Every person got the chance to feel all the interesting parts of the elephant and get a kiss from "Little Boy".

We got to feed the elephants as a reward for letting us get so close and learn about them with a hands on experience. Once they had eaten we got to walk them by holding our hands by their trunks. They are so gentle and it's amazing how comfortable you feel around these huge creatures.

The part we had all been anticipating was just around the corner...

We went and looked at their stables which are giant and definately show elephants live there. Poles were missing from where the elephants had tried to show how strong they are.

The time had finally arrived...We each got a chance, with a partner on "Big Boy" and singlular on "Little Boy". The ride was amazing and the elephants feel like giant horses.

If that experience wasnt amazing enough some of us got the chance to head off to the Kruger National Park.
We stopped off for snacks and cooldrinks and then made our way through. We didn't have much luck in the beginning and only spotted buck and a Leopard Tortoise. We stopped for lunch where unbeknown to us we were sharing our table with a huge fruit bat.

After filling our tummy's and doing abit of curio shopping we carried on in search of more animals. We were lucky enough to see very impressive birds, a hippo, a giant white rhino, a herd of very relaxed elephants, a hyena with cubs ans many other little creatures.

We ended off the perfect day with the perfect thirst quencher...an ice cold coke and then made our way home for dinner and bed. A good day had by all with many more adventures to look forward to.
